Posted on August 19th, 2010 No Comments

States are working to expand seat belt laws so that they require passengers in the back seat to wear seat belts.

Since 2007, six states have expanded their law to include back seat riders including, Indiana, Kansas, Minnesota, Louisiana, New Jersey and Texas.

Officials from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety said that the most important thing that a person can do in a vehicle, no matter where they are sitting, is to where a seat belt in order to prevent injury if an accident occurs. Last year, the national seat belt rate was 84 percent.

Jug handles prove more dangerous than normal left turns

Posted on April 9th, 2010 No Comments

New Jersey is one of only twenty states to utilize jug handles on roadways. Jug handles are left turns that are made from the right lane by way of a large, circular turn that loops back around to mimic a left turn.

While officials maintain that jug handles are safer than normal left turns, the N.J. transportation department has been forced to address concerns regarding an intersection on Route 22 in North Plainfield that contains a jug handle. The intersection has been the location for over fifty accidents in the last three years. Another intersection containing a jug handle on Route 1 and 9 has had a similar number of accidents in the last few years.

Under the old law, all occupants of vehicles were required to wear safety belts at all times, except for adults sitting in the back seat. The new law requires all occupants to wear seat belts at all times. Failure to wear a seat belt is a ticketable offense, although it is a secondary offense, meaning police officers cannot pull you over strictly because of it.
