New Jersey is one of only twenty states to utilize jug handles on roadways. Jug handles are left turns that are made from the right lane by way of a large, circular turn that loops back around to mimic a left turn.
While officials maintain that jug handles are safer than normal left turns, the N.J. transportation department has been forced to address concerns regarding an intersection on Route 22 in North Plainfield that contains a jug handle. The intersection has been the location for over fifty accidents in the last three years. Another intersection containing a jug handle on Route 1 and 9 has had a similar number of accidents in the last few years.
