Nine pedestrians were hit by a vehicle last week as they attempted to cross the street near the New Meadowlands Stadium area in East Rutherford, N.J., authorities said. Three lanes of traffic stopped for the pedestrians to cross, police said, but the vehicle in the fourth lane continued traveling. The 21-year-old driver fled the scene after the accident, authorities said.
He was arrested when an officer on the lookout noticed a car that matched the description of the car that fled. As of Thursday, four of the nine car accident victims remained hospitalized, including a 22-month-old boy, authorities said. Police said the driver was charged with aggravated assault by an automobile, DWI and leaving the scene of an accident with serious injuries.
